Yes, it's a snow day. And I am excited! I definitely like snow days more now than when I was in school. I think one reason I like them so much is that because we don't have to make them up! It's pretty great.
I didn't sleep very well last night because I kept dreaming about finding out if school was closed. And I kept waking up to check my phone to see what time it was and if anyone had texted me yet to tell me there was no school. I had one really stressful dream (which didn't really make sense) about how I'd assumed there'd be a snow day, so I went back home to Camp Hill, and then school wasn't closed and I couldn't get back and everyone was mad at me. But I woke up from that dream to the sound of a text message at 5:31 am that there was no school! So it all turned out OK.
I'm going to be missing some school in the next two weeks, so I plan to use today to start getting ready for that, doing as much as I can from home, which might not be that much. I don't plan on leaving the house though. I agreed to help write curriculum for Urban Promise's summer camp, so I get to miss two days next week to go on a retreat with the other writers. I expect writing the curriculum will be quite a bit of work and pretty time consuming, so I'm glad I get a retreat out of it! Then the next week is my annual recruiting trip to western PA with Rob and Kristin, which is always fun and memorable. We'll be going to Grove City, Westminster, Geneva, and hopefully other schools too. And I hope to get to see some college friends!
December was a good month in the land of kindergarten. Highlights included:
A trip to the Nutcracker with 5 kids from my class and some parents and siblings and other Urban Promise people, including these two lovely ladies in their matching coats.

Our annual Christmas program. It's always fun to see the kids dressed up and to watch them on stage. This year they sang nice and loud. The program had songs from lots of different countries to go with our world cultures theme, and there were some really nice numbers. It was especially great to see the older kids singing and playing instruments.
Making gingerbread houses! It's something I've thought about doing every year, but I've always decided before that the kids won't be able to handle it and neither will I. This year I decided to go for it, and it was lots of fun. I got a little over-ambitious though, as I tend to do, and attempted three food related projects in one day. Somehow it worked out and we all had a good time. But I was thoroughly exhausted afterwards.
Christmas break was great and relaxing, and we had a New Year's party where we wore tiny hats. What better way to ring in a new year?

2011 got off to an unexpectedly exciting start with the addition of a new student to my class. And he's a handful. So that's really shaken up my class dynamics. I've gotta say it would have been nice to just coast through the rest of the year with my little angels, but I guess that's not the way it's going to be. That would be too easy anyway, right? So for now I'll enjoy my snow day and get ready to go back to school tomorrow to battle to restore order and routine to my classroom. It feels like the first month of school all over again!
