I had a lovely Thanksgiving, but it definitely flew by. I was looking forward to going back to school more than usual because I was excited to start celebrating Christmas with my class. This is (hopefully) going to be the year when I make gingerbread houses with my class and teach them lots of carols and do lots of crafts and other fun stuff.
The first day back after Thanksgiving break, four of my students were playing this:

They were acting out Thanksgiving dinner. They built a table out of wooden blocks and all helped "cook" and set the table, and then they held hands to pray. It was pretty awesome to watch. I can't really imagine the boy who initiated the hand holding and praying doing that with his family, but maybe he does, or maybe he just decided in his mind that that's how it should be.
Speaking of Thanksgiving and thankfulness, I am so thankful for my class. I'm trying to be intentional about telling them that on a regular basis. I have a video of the whole class praise dancing that I could watch over and over. Only two of them actually learned the real choreography, but the rest of the class wanted to try too. Two teenagers who work at after care are teaching praise dance to any kids who want to learn it. The little praise dancers performed at the annual Urban Promise Thanksgiving Dinner and at our chapel service at school. My students who were in it were really amazing. The rest of the girls were in third grade to seventh grade, but my students were right in the front and did just as well as the older girls. I wish I had a video of their performance, but this one of my class will do for now. But I can't post it right now so I'll have to try it later.
We start our Christmas unit tomorrow, but last week we started learning about Advent. One reason I love teaching kindergarten is because I get to teach them things for the first time. None of them had heard of Advent or an Advent wreath, and most of them don't know the Christmas story. So it's a lot of fun to share these stories with them and see how excited they are to learn them.
I've been listening to Christmas music exclusively since the day after Thanksgiving. I have 3 different Pandora Christmas radio stations and an mp3 CD in my car with all my Christmas albums. But I've mostly been listening Sara Groves' new album that you can download for FREE on her website. It's called O Holy Night Tour: The Prison Show, and it's a live recording of a concert she did at a women's prison. It gives me chills every time I listen to it. I also listened to a great Rob Bell sermon about advent this morning that you can hear on his website.
It's my bedtime. I'll try posting the praise dancing video tomorrow!
